What is meant by “IT certification”?

In the IT workplace, it is common to find people who use acronyms like MCSE, OCP DBA, MCP, PMI etc.  What are these?

These are product certifications provided by vendors such as Oracle and Microsoft.  For example, OCP refers to “Oracle Certified Professional” and MCP refers to “Microsoft Certified Professional”. Microsoft provides certification for Microsoft products and Oracle for their products. The value of the certification depends on how the certifications are conducted. Some vendors collect the fees and send you the documents. But they won’t have any test center or any such secured place where you can go and take the exams. You can sit at your home and complete the exam. Such exams usually do not hold any value in the industry.  For some of the products, the vendors conduct the certification with the intention of enhancing the knowledge in the product, but the industry doesn’t require them. So, the intention of the guide is to give you the various certifications and their importance.

Do I really need any certification to get an IT job?

Not necessarily. But it is an added advantage to prove that you have a certification in a specific technology. For some fields such as data warehousing, there are no recognized exams. The employers also do not provide much importance to certifications. But for some technologies such as Oracle, J2EE, .NET/C#, Teradata, Networking, etc, certifications are of good value.   So, it entirely depends on the technology in question.

Some companies will specifically ask for certified people in their job advertisements.

When there are ten candidates applying for two positions, the certification will give you an advantage over others and ensure that your resume is picked up first.

1. Current certification holders may use logos and other methods to advertise their status.

2. "Members-only" access to web sites, information, demo software, or other restricted resources (such as publications, training, beta exam invitations, and so forth).
